The Amur Leopard: A Critically Endangered Icon of the Wild

The Amur leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis) is one of the rarest big cats on Earth, with fewer than 100 individuals remaining in the wild. Native to the temperate forests of the Russian Far East and northeastern China, this elusive leopard is on the brink of extinction due to habitat loss, poaching, and climate change.

Physical Characteristics

The Amur leopard is distinct from other leopard subspecies due to its thick, pale cream-colored fur with large, widely spaced rosettes. This adaptation helps it blend into the snowy and forested environments of its habitat. Males typically weigh between 70–105 pounds (32–48 kg), while females are slightly smaller.

Habitat and Range
